Let’s Talk About Breathing
By Marion Rouvas — Director & Vocal Coach, Voiceology Australia
In my opinion, breathing is the most misunderstood and neglected topic for so many singers.
Less is more!
The only real difference between speaking and singing a note is airflow.
The sooner we understand that, the better.
Try this:
Say, “Hi, how are you?” — naturally, with ease. Notice how relaxed that feels.
Now say the same sentence again, but stretch it out:
“Hiiiiiii, HOOOOW ARRRRRE Yaouoooooo.”
That’s exactly what happens when we sing — we elongate the notes and the airflow.
It should still feel simple, relaxed, and easy.
The Way You Breathe In Determines the Sound You Make
Don’t breathe as if it’s your last breath —
breathe as if you’re about to speak.
Always concentrate on the sound you’re going to make (the note you’re about to sing).
Taking too much air before a note, or locking up your muscles and “holding” the diaphragm, only makes matters worse.
Remember: the diaphragm’s only job is to get out of the way — to flatten so the lungs can expand and drop into that cavity (just like when you’re asleep).
Simply put:
Breathe in and out in a relaxed, calm fashion.
Try This Exercise
Sit on a chair and lean forward, resting your elbows on your knees.
Breathe in and out.
Feel how the lungs fill into that deeper cavity (the diaphragm).Stay in that position and place one hand on your side.
Feel how the rib cage expands and contracts as you breathe.
This is the same sensation you’re aiming for when standing upright:
Head and eyes forward, shoulders relaxed, feet shoulder-width apart, and simply —
breathe in and breathe out.
Remember
Your brain starts the process by telling your lungs,
“This person is going to diaphragm-breathe.”
Let your body do the rest — it doesn’t need extra help from you.
Till next time —
Happy singing!
